Pip is a sensitive orphan boy growing up in the damp country marshes of England, raised by his abusive older sister and her kind-hearted, gentle blacksmith husband, Joe Gargery. Pip’s future is simple: he is destined to become a poor blacksmith just like Joe. However, one cold Christmas Eve, while Pip is visiting his parents' graves, a terrifying, escaped convict named Abel Magwitch grabs him. Magwitch shakes Pip violently and threatens to cut his throat unless the boy steals food and a metal file from Joe’s shop. Pip, terrified for his life, obeys. The next day, the police recapture Magwitch, but the convict secretly protects Pip by claiming he stole the food himself.
Shortly after, Pip's life changes forever when he is invited to the mysterious Satis House, the decaying mansion of Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham is a wealthy, bitter woman who was heartbroken decades ago when her fiancé abandoned her on her wedding day. She still wears her old, yellowed wedding dress, and her rotten wedding cake sits on a dust-covered table surrounded by spiders. Miss Havisham has adopted a beautiful but cold-hearted girl named Estella, whom she has raised to break men's hearts as revenge against all mards. Pip falls deeply in love with Estella, but she mocks his rough hands and poor country boots. Pip becomes deeply ashamed of his simple life and dreams of becoming a rich, sophisticated gentleman to win her heart.
Years pass, and just as Pip accepts his life as a blacksmith’s apprentice, a wealthy London lawyer named Mr. Jaggers arrives with shocking news. An extremely wealthy, anonymous benefactor has granted Pip "Great Expectations"—a massive fortune. The only conditions are that Pip must immediately move to London, be educated as a high-class gentleman, and never ask the identity of his secret donor. Pip immediately assumes the benefactor is Miss Havisham, believing she wants him to become rich so he can finally marry Estella.
In London, Pip gets caught up in a life of luxury and wealth. He buys expensive clothes, gets into debt, and begins to look down on his past. When his kind stepfather, Joe, comes to visit him in London, Pip treats him with coldness and embarrassment because Joe has simple country manners. Pip is completely focused on climbing the social ladder and chasing Estella, who continues to play with his feelings while warning him that she has no heart to love anyone.
The grand illusion of Pip's life shatters on a dark, stormy night when Pip is twenty-three years old. A rough, elderly man knocks on his apartment door. To Pip’s absolute horror, it is Abel Magwitch, the terrifying convict from the marshes! Magwitch reveals that after being sent to prison in Australia, he worked incredibly hard and earned a massive fortune. Because Pip had shown him kindness when he was a starving criminal, Magwitch dedicated his entire life to making Pip a rich gentleman.
Pip's world collapses. His wealth does not come from a noble woman like Miss Havisham, but from a banned criminal. This means Estella is not meant for him by any grand plan. Furthermore, Magwitch has returned to England illegally; if the police find him, he will be executed. Pip is filled with shame and disgust at first, but looking at the old man's devotion, he realizes how ungrateful he has been to his true friends, like Joe. Pip decides he must hide Magwitch and help him escape the country safely.
Pip and his close friend Herbert devise a plan to smuggle Magwitch onto a foreign steamer boat along the river Thames. However, on the day of the escape, the police ambush their rowing boat, guided by Compeyson, Magwitch's old criminal enemy. A violent struggle breaks out in the water, and Compeyson drowns. Magwitch is dragged out alive but severely injured and arrested.
While Magwitch lies dying in the prison hospital, Pip stays by his side every day, finally showing him true love and gratitude. Before Magwitch dies, Pip whispers a beautiful secret to comfort him: that Magwitch's long-lost daughter is alive, beautiful, and loved by Pip (revealing that Estella was actually Magwitch’s biological daughter, adopted by Miss Havisham).
With Magwitch dead, the government seizes all his wealth, and Pip loses every penny of his fortune. He falls severely ill and is almost sent to debtors' prison, but the simple blacksmith, Joe, travels to London, pays off Pip's immediate debts, and nurses him back to health with unconditional love. Humbled and wiser, Pip apologizes to Joe, takes a modest job, and works hard for many years. A decade later, Pip visits the ruins of Satis House and meets Estella, who is also lonely after a difficult, abusive marriage. As they walk out of the ruined garden together into the evening mist, Pip realizes that true worth comes from a good heart, not money, and he sees "no shadow of another parting" from Estella.
