However, in 2008, the global cellular and Wi-Fi network infrastructure was still slow and unstable, meaning an internet-dependent laptop often felt sluggish and frustratingly limited when disconnected from a home router network.

The 2010 Collision: The Arrival of the iPad Monolith
Despite massive sales to students and mobile business travelers, the netbook category suffered from severe consumer satisfaction issues. Home users bought them expecting a full, fast Windows laptop experience at a bargain price, only to discover that the tiny screens caused eye strain and the low-power processors choked when loading complex, media-heavy modern websites.
The category’s fate was permanently sealed on January 27, 2010, when Steve Jobs sat on a stage in San Francisco, held up the original Apple iPad, and asked the audience a direct question: "Is there room for a third category of device in the middle between a laptop and a smartphone? Some people thought that was a netbook. The problem is, netbooks aren't better at anything!"
The modern tablet completely undermined the netbook market layout. It offered high-resolution touch displays, days of standby battery life, fluid web scrolling, and a vibrant app ecosystem without needing a physical keyboard or a heavy clamshell chassis. Consumers abandoned the cramped netbook form factor almost overnight, forcing global PC manufacturers to clear out their remaining Atom inventory and pivot toward premium, razor-thin Ultrabook laptop designs.
